What independence means to me, a college student

Happy 4th of July NextSteppers!

All this talk about independence got me thinking (a rare circumstance this time of year) about what independence means to me as a college student and what it might mean for all you students who are about to go into your first year of college this fall. So, to shock and awe you all in true 4th of July fashion, this blog post may actually be about something serious. Who knew I had it in me.

Cue the cheesy music.

Learning how to be independent pretty much sums up all of the experiences you’re going to have in college, especially during your first year. Who’s in charge of getting you up in the morning for class? You are. Who’s going to pay for that trip to the movies? You. Who’s going to have to kill that spider crawling on your shower caddy? You guessed it…you! (Although I don’t really do that last one myself. Spiders are creepy, right? Independence or not, I’m not going near those things.)

Anyway, my point is that it might be a shock to have to rely so heavily on yourself when, up until now, you probably had a lot of people helping you out. It may take a while to get used to (trust me, I had a lot of “all I have are dirty clothes because I forgot to do the laundry” days) but once you get into the swing of things, you’ll be amazed with how much you can do – and how much fun it is to take care of yourself!

That might seem really weird to say, but it’s true. College is pretty much the only time in your life where you only have one person to have to take care of: yourself. Maybe that sounds kind of selfish, but it’s not really. It’s a time to figure out who you really are, what you’re capable of and what it is exactly you want to do for the rest of your life. Isn’t that what college is all about? (Besides, you know, getting an education. I suppose that’s a big factor as well.)

So readers, just think that when we remember our independence today, it’s not just about celebrating the past. Celebrating independence can be something different for everyone; whether it be the first time you do laundry for yourself or by paying your own way through college. No matter how you celebrate, think of your independence as the next great phase in your life.

Until next time,

Laura
