Let’s get to know the May/June 2012 Super Counselor winner.
Super Counselor: Carla Elliff, Collinsville High School, Collinsville Ill.
Nominator: Karen Olsen, colleague
School Counselor Carla Elliff goes above and beyond her duties to encourage academic success and excellence for the students at Collinsville High School. As department chair of her counseling office, Elliff has redefined the priorities of the department to be more student-focused and increased the ability to service not just certain groups of students but the whole school.
“I have seen her passion for school counseling,” says colleague Karen Olsen. “She finds ways to motivate, inspire and express authentic caring for the students.”
Elliff has assisted her students in a variety of ways including implementing a “senior survival guide” for students to use as they research post-high school plans and instigated “four-year plan talks” for freshmen that will aid them in their chosen career path.
“Carla is a mentor and inspiration for staff and students alike,” insists Olsen. Elliff assisted a student who had little family support, helping with college applications and financial aid. This young man graduated high school and is currently in college, hoping to pursue a career as a teacher.
“When I think of Carla, the words genuine, compassionate, hardworking, creative and motivated come to mind,” says Olsen. Elliff’s dedication to her position and her willingness to always be there for her students makes her a Super Counselor.
