Holiday shopping on a student budget

After being in a schoolwork-induced seclusion for the past several months, I emerged last week realizing something important.holiday-shopping-cart

It’s already the middle of December.

How did this happen?! I feel like Thanksgiving was just days ago!

Unfortunately, my strange time-warp also gave me the realization that I have absolutely none of my holiday shopping done. This tends to be a problem when I have less than a week left.

Cue: panic mode. Holiday shopping shouldn’t really be that big of a deal right? I mean my parents are constantly telling me that they don’t need anything and my friends are all “save your money don’t buy me anything!” but what kind of daughter/friend would I be if I got them nothing for Christmas? People like to think of it as being nice by saying “don’t get me anything” but really it just ends up making things worse because I will get you something, despite what you say, but I have no idea where to start because nobody gives me ideas.

To top it all off, I am also a student, a.k.a. my funds are, shall we say, limited. So I’m in a bit of a pickle.

This is where my frugality comes in handy. I am Queen of the Bargain Shoppers, finding deals on the clearance rack that could make your wallet sing with joy. Skeptical? I own a $15 winter jacket, a pair of $1 jeans and a dress that retails for over $90 that I scored for $5. You don’t mess.

Anyway, since it’s the season of the giving spirit, I thought I would share some of my bargain-hunting tactics that can help you get what you need for everyone on your shopping list while still having enough money for ramen noodles at the end of the day. Happy holidays to all!

1. Never pay full price for anything. You know those obnoxious emails you get from companies after you buy something from them, like, once? A lot of those feature some great bargains! Also, the Sunday paper is chock full of ads that can let you know where the best deals are and coupons to go along with it. Don’t like coupons? I guess you don’t like keeping your money either.

2. You have to dig to find what you want. There’s a reason that the clearance section is all the way in the back and is never organized very well – some people won’t be willing to sort through the pile to get what they want! You, handy bargain shopper on the other hand, are ready and willing to look through 20 pieces of clothing to find that perfect “it” gift for your best friend. It’s worth the effort, I promise!

3. Don’t limit yourself to the bargain stores. Who says you can only shop at Walmart to afford everything on your list? It’s not true! I’ve found incredible deals at Ann Taylor Loft, American Eagle, Old Navy and H&M that I’ve gotten for under ten bucks. Just remember: the clearance rack is your friend.

4. Go online. Not only is internet shopping convenient, it’s also a great way to score deals. Remember those email promotions I mentioned? A lot of them are good online as well as in-store! Plus, you’ll have more selection online than in-store, making your bargain-hunting prospects even more likely.

5. Be ready to spend some time. Bargain shopping is not for the weak or easily deterred. You’re not going to find that perfect deal in the first store you walk into. The ultimate bargain shopper has both victories and fails but in the end will come out with something great, as long as he or she takes the time to find it.

I wish you luck in all of your holiday shopping endeavors! Now go out there and show that cash register what you’re made of.

Until next time,

Laura
