Tweet your way to a scholarship!

Everyone always says a picture is worth a thousand words, but who knew a tweet could be worth thousands of dollars!

According to a recent article in USA Today the University of Iowa is using a social media favorite in a unique way. The university is asking prospective students to submit a 140-word tweet in place of a second admissions essay. Students could earn a full scholarship to the school, which is worth $37,000! The deadline is  July 28!

I guess this is their attempt to force students to practice concise writing skills and get on board the social media wagon. (Although I’m sure creativity will play heavily in the judging.)

But there’s more. Other organizations are offering scholarships via Twitter:

• Kentucky Fried Chicken offers a Colonel’s Scholars Twitter scholarship for $20,000 over four years based on a tweet responding to “tell us in 140 characters why you deserve a $20,000 scholarship.”

• The 140 Scholarship, presented by College Scholarships.org, challenges students to tweet about how Twitter can make the world a better place. The winner receives $1,400.
