Q: I’ve always been shy and had a hard time fitting in at school. What can I do to help ease my nerves and make new friends when I get to college? — Emily D’Ambrosia

A: The best way to meet new people and make friends is to put yourself out there. It can be intimidating to make new friends, but remember this: as a college freshman, you will be in the exact same position as most of your peers. Start with your roommate(s); they can make the transition less daunting and are ready-made friends (since you will be sharing a small space and living together for at least a full semester). Look for opportunities to join clubs, get involved in campus events and talk to other students. Finding commonalities can be easy when you are surrounded by your peers. Try to challenge yourself to do at least one thing outside of your comfort zone each day. College is a great time to expand your horizons.
