Scholarship: John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest

Amount: $500-$10,000

Requirements: The contest is open to high school students, in grades 9 through 12. The applicants must write an essay of 1,000 words or less about an act of political courage by an elected U.S. official that occurred during or after 1956. The official may have handled an issue at the local, state, or national level of government. The essays must have a minimum of five sources, including one non-internet source. Applicants must register online before sending in the essay and have a nominating teacher review the essay. The essays are judged on content (55 percent) and presentation (45 percent).
