iStock_000021963294_LargeAre you an artist who is also computer savvy? You might want to consider a degree in graphic design. As a graphic design major, you’ll combine computer skills and creative thinking to design books, magazines, CD jackets, websites, and more. You’ll gain experience working on real-world projects such as designing corporate logos, websites, and publications.

Education
According to the College Board, this major is often offered at the bachelor’s degree level. In class, you’ll learn to use the cutting-edge computer programs that are relevant in the industry today. A typical course load might look something like this: History of graphic design, graphic design studio, Photoshop for designers, and typography. You may also be expected to put together a portfolio and exhibit your work during your time of study.

What to know before you apply
If you want to study graphic design, consider schools that offer it as a standalone major, not just an emphasis within art or another major. It may also be helpful to get to know the professors before you apply. How many professors teach graphic design only? Have they worked out in the field recently? Finally, it’s important to make sure that the schools you choose are well equipped with the latest technology and software. You’ll be spending a lot of time working at a computer desk, and having access to state-of-the-art tools will improve your workflow.
