Major Monday — Dance/Performing Arts

A dancerIf you enjoy expressing yourself through the art of dance, you might consider pursuing it as a major in college. You will develop your physical skills as a dancer, as well as study the history, theory, and science of the art form. Prepare to challenge your body and mind with a demanding schedule of technique and choreography classes, long rehearsals, and a full academic course load.

Education
According to the College Board, this major is typically offered at the bachelor’s degree level, as a bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) or bachelor of arts (B.A.). If you pursue a dance major, you’ll spend a lot of time practicing and rehearsing; studying a variety of techniques such as ballet, modern, and jazz; as well as working behind the scenes of performances on lights, costumes, and sound. In the classroom, you’ll study dance education, history, notation, theory, and philosophy.

What to know before you apply
Applying for a performing arts major requires effort above and beyond the typical application process — you’ll have to audition in addition to filling out a paper application. Learn about each school’s audition policies before you apply. It’s also helpful to research performance opportunities at each school. Will there be many opportunities to perform at the school itself? Does the surrounding community support and enrich the school’s performing arts program? Are there any local arts organizations that have partnerships with the school? These are important things to consider when choosing where to apply.
