It’s summer! I’m free! I’m…bored.

If you’re like me (and at times I really hope you’re not), you’ve probably been counting down the days until your freedom for weeks.

56 days to go! 4567 hours! A lot of minutes!

Ice cream. The ultimate summer boredom killer.

And now that freedom is here (or upon you very soon) you may suddenly get the feeling that…wow I have nothing to do. Not surprising, seeing as school tends to take up a good portion of your life and leaves you feeling tired enough that you start to nod off much earlier than you might want to admit.

Then summer comes around, with the endless hours to do whatever the heck you want (within reason, crazy kids) and all of a sudden…nothing is going on. You’ve seen that episode on TV already. You’ve been to that movie already. You’ve had too much ice cream already. (Just kidding about the ice cream. You can never have too much ice cream).

So here you are, sitting around, bored, waiting around for someone to tell you what to do. And, you’re in luck, because I am just that person! (It’s a personal joy of mine to tell people what to do. And, you know, help them and stuff).

With that, here’s some things I came up with just now you that might want to do this summer to make your life a little bit less boring:

  1. Roll the windows down, crank up the stereo, and belt out the latest Top 40 song. Don’t have a car? Do it on your back porch. Not only is singing stress relieving, you’ll also meet lots of new people! Who may or may not throw things at you.
  2. Look for free concerts in your area. Gather some friends (real or imaginary), revel in the talent of others (or join along if you are equally talented) and enjoy the feeling you don’t have to worry about getting up early the next morning.
  3. Practice a new accent. Then go into the nearest grocery store or gas station and talk to the cashier in your new accent: “G’day fair lady, I’ma just be getttin’ this here packet o’ gum and be on my way! Au revoir!”
  4. Buy a hammock or lounge chair, get something to read or listen to, get a cold drink and enjoy the experience of doing nothing. Because really, in summertime, boredom doesn’t actually exist.
