Hello NextSteppers! Today is the last day of my internship at NextStepU. Before you start crying, let me say I’ll be back working here part-time in the fall. So you have not heard the last of my OCD organizing tips or my advice about freshman year. There’ll be plenty more where that came from during the school year.
Working here has been amazing and I am delighted I’ll be able to continue writing and editing during my senior year at Nazareth. The internship has shown me how I can use the skills I learned in college in the workplace. So, the way I communicate with my coworkers stems from the way I communicate with my professors. And the way I come up with ideas for papers and projects is similar to the way I am inspired to write for the blog posts and articles. Meaning an idea just comes to me and I scramble for a pen so I won’t forget it.
However, interning also provides more freedom than college does. I am able to be sarcastic and colloquial in my blog posts in ways I never could be in an academic setting. Sure, I get to write about how Sex and the City over-utilizes gender stereotypes in my communication classes. But it’s sort of frowned upon if I go off on tangents about why that show is so unrealistic. Speaking of, how do those women take 2 hour brunches every day? Do they work nights or something?
Anyway, I cannot stress enough about how much I have loved interning here. I learned so much about how to write for publications, how to edit and how to work for faster deadlines. I was able to use what I learned in my Communication and English programs and I was able to branch off from that foundation and do my own thing. It has been a great summer!
Enjoy summer break and good luck with orientation! I’ll see you in the fall!
