Are you curious about the way food reacts with our bodies and how we can use nutrition to better our lives and ourselves? Then you might want to consider declaring a major in food, nutrition and wellness studies.
Education
According to the College Board, students who major in nutrition often earn a bachelor’s degree in their field of study. Typical courses that students often take with this major are dietetics, nutritional science, food service management and culinary arts. Students may also take a course on community nutrition in which they learn how to plan and run nutrition education programs that seek to better the food consumption of people of different ethnic groups or for people of lower income. These courses require research, writing and an understanding of the biological relationship that people have with food.
What to know before you apply
Students should be passionate about food, health and nutrition and be prepared to complete several science prerequisites to prepare them for the many science and lab courses they will have to take. Students should look into the labs of the institutions they are looking at attending and make sure they are up-to-date. They should also look into possible internship opportunities as well as be aware of how many nutritional programs the school offers (whether it be a broad range of topics or something specific, like nutrition for diabetics).
Salary
Many students who major in nutrition likely plan on becoming a dietician or nutritionist. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, people in this profession earned an average of $53,230 a year as of 2009. Students may also plan to become a health educator upon graduation and can look to earn an average of $49,060 (as of 2009).
