Whenever I have a lot of free time on my hands, my brain starts to go off on tangents and thinks about the random tidbits of knowledge I’ve picked up during the day. So it should come as no surprise that as I was driving back home from a friends house that I started thinking about the random quirks that different people have. Specifically, I learned that day that some people have an internal compass and can tell you what direction is which without batting an eye. It boggles my mind that people have more directional skills than “somewhere that way” and can actually specifically tell me what direction is North or West. I, on the other hand, can’t get halfway across town without the use of a GPS and I base my directional skills on random landmarks and not, you know, directions. (“I don’t know what route 250 is, are you talking about the turn that’s 3 traffic signals past the tree that looks like a moose?”)

Despite my lack of the “directional quirk” I have a quirk of my own: the “song lyric quirk.” While not the rarest of quirks, (why is this starting to sound like I’m describing wild animals?) the SLQ is the ability to recall and repeat complete lyrics for many different songs. While this may not be the greatest use of brain space, SLQ-ers are definitely dominant in activities such as karaoke, deep and thoughtful Facebook status updates and “Name That Tune.” So take that everyone who laughed at my perfect recall of “Baby One More Time.” (I must confess, I still believe…STILL BELIEVE!!)
Anyway, since apparently my brain is going on another one of it’s ridiculous tangents, it’s time to reign it back in and get to the point. I’m sure a lot of you reading this right now are getting ready to go back to school and for those of you who going off to college, you might be able to use this post as a source of inspiration. (You know, if you find Britney Spears lyrics inspiring). But really, start thinking about what your own “quirk” is. What about you is unique, what’s something you can do that no one else can? Got your quirk? Now use it! When you’re trying to figure out what you want to do in college or as a job, keep your quirk in mind and use it to your advantage. It doesn’t have to be absolutely literal (for example PLEASE don’t become a professional karaoke singer if your a SLQ-er.) Instead use your quirk as a springboard for what you can see yourself doing. (Going with the SLQ example again, your perfect recall of lyrics may be an indication that you would be good at something where your memory and recall is involved like research or history).
Whatever your “quirk” is, wear it proudly and embrace it as a part of your future. You never know what it will help lead you to.
