Let’s take a closer look at Northeastern State University, located in Oklahoma.
Founded in 1846 by the Cherokee Nation, the picturesque Tahlequah campus reminds students of the history and heritage of NSU. A large bronze sculpture of Sequoyah, 19th century diplomat and creator of Cherokee syllabary greets you as you enter the campus.
Today, NSU is the fourth largest public four-year institution in Oklahoma, serving nearly 9,000 students on its three state campuses. The state of Oklahoma purchased the college from the Cherokee Nation over 100 years ago, but has held onto their history, offering majors such as Indian/Native American Education and Indian/Native American Studies. Education is the most popular program at NSU, and students can choose to concentrate in virtually any subject. In addition to the 56 undergraduate and 21 graduate programs offered at NSU, the University offers the only Doctorate of Optometry program in Oklahoma. NSU is a member of NCAA Division II Athletics
Cool fact: Founded in 1985, The Sequoyah Institute is a non-profit extension of the NSU, dedicated to providing cultural enrichment and fine arts appreciation to the campus and community at large.
