For the past almost three-and-a-half years at college, I’ve made countless plans to visit with two of my friends who go to school just over 2 hours away from me. However,I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that it wasn’t until this past weekend that we actually followed through. What shocks me theĀ most isn’t just the fact that it took us so long to get together in the first place (the four of us are
notoriously bad with making plans…it’s a constant battle of “I’ll let you know!” and no one lets each other know) but rather the fact that we’re not going to have all that much longer to visit each other at our respective colleges. (That sounded seriously morbid. I meant since we all will be graduating in May and we won’t be at the same places anymore. And, in case you were wondering, there probably is going to be some nostalgic “how did time go so fast?!” going on in this post. Just thought I would warn you in advance).
Anyway, so our fun adventure included a stop at two different colleges, three different little villages and one awesome breakfast spot out in the middle of nowhere (isn’t that where you always find the best food?) The bacon there? I swear, took me to a higher place. No lie, this bacon came in extra thick slices, practically the depth of my laptop and was cooked to that perfect just-crunchy-enough-to-not-be-burnt taste. My salty taste buds were cheering! Add all that to three mouthwatering pieces, some buttery scrambled eggs and a stack o’pancakes with homemade maple syrup and I swore I would never be the same.
Now if you’ll excuse me I just made myself unnecessarily hungry so I’m going to go make myself a high-caloric snack.

Ok, I’m back. Anyway, this story had more of a moral to it than bacon (though the bacon was seriously story-worthy). Rather, the idea that sometimes getting away from your campus (or home or whatever) can be a serious refresher. Being in the same place all the time can get you into a rut and sometimes all you need is a little break from the same old thing to make you remember that a) there’s more out there then your little bubble, b) you CAN actually take a break for a little while (I swear!) and c) that it’s really nice to see some familiar faces you haven’t seen in a while. While this is obviously much easier to do with friends who are in a moderate driving distance from you, I highly recommend that, at the very least once in your college career that you make a road trip with some old friends to see how they’re living life when they’re away at college. You might be apart but it doesn’t mean that you’ve changed. (I can speak for that absolutely. For example, my friends and I described our trip as a “middle school sleepover” complete with hair and nails and a movie. This may not be your cup of tea but hey, it’s what we’ve always done and what will still do until we’re old. We’re eternal 12-year-olds).
So friends, if you’re in college now, think about making a road trip to see an old friend. Get a new experience and an old one all in one! (How profound is that?) If you’re about to go to college, think about this when you go away. Having plans to see old faces can be a comfort if you’re homesick or missing the “good ol’ days” of high school because you get to be with the people you know without leaving the new life you’re starting.
Get out there everyone! And find some more bacon stops for me!
Until next time,
Laura
