The second semester of the year is always a tough one to get back into. You’ve just come back from probably a month (or longer) break of spending time with family, binge watching a series on Netflix, and seeing all your old friends and now it’s time to get back on the grind. You’re thrown right back into countless hours of homework, studying and group projects.
Setting a goal can be a good way to ease back into the semester. It can be an academic related goal, a personal goal or a goal just for fun. If you give yourself something to focus on it will help your focus.
An academic related goal could be as simple as getting above a 90 on a test or getting a “B” in a class over the course of a semester. A personal goal could be to eat healthier, work out more or join a new club or organization on campus. Other goals could be fun to just improve your overall mood as the new semester starts. A fun goal such as reading a book every month, or having a monthly “date” with your friends at a nice restaurant, or watching a movie with your friends once a week could give your something exciting to look forward to.
After all, now that we’ve just started a new year, it’s a good time to start getting into new habits and routines. They say it takes about 21 days to break a habit — why not avoid having to break a habit when you can start off with a good habit?
Allowing yourself to have these goals will not only help you focus but can take your mind of some of the more stressful things that college can bring you. It gives you other things to focus on and sometimes you just need a distraction or two.
