Hey Next Step readers! My name is Valerie Mundt and I am going to be writing for NextStepU over the next couple of weeks. I am originally from the Rochester, New York area and my ultimate career goal is to become a news anchor in either Rochester or California. I’m really excited to share with you the experiences I had in college — and, hopefully, you can learn a thing or two in the process!
As a college student, I had a tremendous experience that has instilled many lifelong memories for me. After high school, I decided that transferring from a community college to a four-year university was right for me, so I began my college career at Monroe Community College, a two-year college in my area. There, I took some of my beginner courses, got used to learning in a college atmosphere and created new friendships. I then transferred to Roberts Wesleyan College, a four-year institution just outside of Rochester. This was a smaller place where I flourished and really became a part of the campus life. I learned to grow both intellectually and socially and took advantage of the opportunities that a small campus can provide. While attending Roberts, I was able to receive a well-rounded education that really gave me a background for my field of study. I was also able to increase my knowledge by engaging in thoughtful classroom discussions that enhanced the growth of my mind.
In addition to my academics, I also participated in clubs on the Roberts campus by joining the dance ministry and cheer team. This enabled me to become a well-rounded student who knew the importance the learning and staying focused on my classes, while also being able to interact with others socially.
I can’t wait to share with you all of the things that I’ve experienced as a college student and I hope the things that I’ve learned can help you when it comes to making your decision.
