Has a thought of attending a community college cross your mind? Do you know of any local community colleges in your area? You may be curious as to why you should choose a two-year one as your first choice. Here is why I decided on a community college.
I attended Monroe Community College (MCC) right out of high school. I chose to attend a community college for my first two years mainly because of finances. As I reflect back on my MCC journey, the financial benefits certainly were great, but there were also so many opportunities MCC offered me as a student. MCC enabled me to become grounded in education as well in other areas of my life. I recall some specific reasons behind my decision and I hope you might consider these as well when it comes to finding what school is best for you.
The Path to a Future Career
Finances tend to be the ultimate reason behind a college decision. If you look beyond the green, you will see another advantage of attending a community college. When I was a senior in high school, I decided that the career path I wanted to pursue was in the field of Communication. While attending Monroe Community College, I took my General Education courses or Gen Eds and classes that related to my major.
You may be reading this post and have no idea what kind of career that you would like to pursue. You may even have several majors of interests whizzing through your mind, that may or may not be totally unrelated. That is the challenge of figuring out the right college. Community colleges are a great place to start because you are offered a variety of majors with less of a commitment. If you are not sure of your career, consider the option of receiving a Liberal Arts Degree — this allows you to explore a variety of subjects while also earning college credit for the next stage of your college career.
Work/Commuter Life
Another reason why I chose to experience this MCC journey was because of work and having to commute daily for classes. During my freshman and sophomore year, I worked while living at home. This college gave me the freedom to earn/save some of my income for my last two years of college. However, even though I was living at home, that doesn’t mean I didn’t experience all that the campus had to offer. With special commuter lounges and resources, I was able to access all the resources of on-campus students while having the freedom to go home whenever I needed to.
How you start your college career is important. If you have the desire to save money and take classes that help you explore different careers, attending a community college is a smart choice. Your college experience awaits. How will you begin your journey?
