Condensed soup for beginners

My dear friend gave me helpful instructions for next time.

On the first night that my roommates and I moved into our apartment, we decided to that it would be a lovely bonding experience to break into our kitchen for the first time with a simple meal of grilled cheese and tomato soup.

With my severe lack of culinary skills, I was delegated to make the soup, which you would think is the one job you can’t mess up: open can, put on stove and you’re done!

Not so easy. This was, after all, condensed soup. And, unlike the rest of the normal world I had never made soup that I actually had to add something too. (The labels always told me not to put in water!) Since I was about to make extremely rich and probably extremely terrible soup, my roommates intervened by handing me a cup of water to dilute it (so that’s why they call it condensed!) and our dinner was saved.

And so, after one embarrassing evening of having to be taught one of the simplest methods of cooking on earth as well as being subjected to several laughs at my expense, I began my independent culinary life.

Like almost every other college student on the planet, my life revolves around a rotation of macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly and a frozen dinner or two to spice things up.

However, there have been those rare occasions like the time I taught my roommate how to make an omelet or when I made French toast for the apartment and I get the indication that I may not be so hopeless after all.

Some of you can likely relate to my troubles and, like me, dread the idea of actually having to prepare the food you consume yourself. Hopefully, my (sad) experience has been able to show you that even at your culinary worst, everybody has those moments where they simply have no idea what they’re doing.

Hopefully, yours comes from something more complex than condensed soup.

Until next time,

Laura
